Updates and Upgrades

Keeping your software up-to-date ensures that you're getting the most out of your software! Spectra and myStratus include a feature that automatically keeps your software current with the latest service releases and upgrades.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN UPDATE AND AN UPGRADE?
  • An UPDATE (or "Service Release") is for the current version and volume you are using. Updates usually occur once a month or so, but may be issued more frequently if needed. Updates include fixes for specific issues and tweaks that improve software performance. Updates may also include minor enhancements to the software. Updates are always free for your version.

  • An UPGRADE is a major change to the software and generally includes significant new features. Upgrades will be a new version or volume. We usually release upgrades once a year. In most cases, upgrades are included free of charge for one year after your initial purchase of the software. Upgrades remain free of charge as long as you have a current maintenance plan (Spectra) or subscription (myStratus).

NOTE: Both UPDATES and UPGRADES are cumulative. Even if you miss an update or upgrade, when you install the most recent one you will get all the features and updates from previous versions and releases.

Automatic Updates

The Automatic Update is a three-step process that is performed by the software automatically. Here are a couple of notes about that process:

  1. Check for Updates - When the software launches, it will automatically check to see if a new update is available. It will also determine if the update is suggested or required
    • Suggested Updates - The user is prompted and given the option to install the update or not.

    • Required Updates -  The user is prompted and required to install the update before continuing.

  2. Download Update - The software will download the update to a shared updates folder called "SPUpdates." By saving the download to a shared folder, other workstations won't have to download the same update over again. For Spectra Microsoft Access users, the shared folder will be a sub-folder of the database folder. For SQL users, the shared folder will be a sub-folder of the "Shared Log" folder. Note: If a shared folder cannot be created, the update will be stored in a folder on the local PC.

  3. Install Update - The installation will occur automatically once the download is complete.

Customizing Automatic Updates

To turn off Automatic Updates (Spectra users only) or to customize the timing of updates (i.e., get early notification of "Preview" releases), adjust your settings on the Automatic Updates page of Maintenance > Preferences > Company (Studio) Preferences.
